Dev Update and Smoke Test!
8 months ago – Wed, Mar 06, 2024 at 06:25:09 PM

Mini NES and Gameboy Dev Update!

So, the NES Version is pretty much feature complete now, a bit of fine tuning the code was needed so we're ready for Kickstarter backers names to appear in the game credits , along with some other little fixes.

The Gameboy version has been catching up nicely, with level generation for each of the 4 worlds complete, a fair bit of testing to do on a chunk of them, but, it's been a fun challenge to compress the NES version down to a smaller screen and it's feeling pretty close to it's NES counterpart despite the lower resolution and catering to a variety of Gameboy screen types. I'm hoping to nail down the levels for the game modes over the weekend assuming all goes well this week, then continue with bug fixes and writing up the ending(s) 🙂

It's Time For Our Smoke Test!

Everything is looking fantastic on the BackerKit side, and we're gearing up to launch the Smoke Test tomorrow, March 7th, 2024 (Thursday). This means a small percentage of you will be receiving your surveys🎉. This quick check will ensure that everything is running smoothly before we proceed to send out the rest of the surveys. We will need you, our flaptastic backers to keep an eye on your inboxes!

If all goes well, we'll be ready to roll out the remaining surveys on Monday. 📝 Your input and feedback are invaluable to us, and we're committed to ensuring a seamless experience every step of the way.

Stay tuned for more updates, and thank you for your continued support!

Wow! Flap Happy is officially Kickstarted! Thank you all so much, I'm still in shock!

It's Sunday night when I'm writing this and I've just finished my session on the Gameboy and Gameboy Color, fixing up the Dungeon set of levels for all you wonderful backers out there!

Thank you all, so, so, so much, from the bottom of my heart and, err, all the rest of it also, top, middle, left ,right, etc, you get the drift yeah?

As has probably been mentioned before, my childhood dream was to release a game I made for the NES and thanks to all you lovelies out there, Jayenkai and Mega Cat Studios, this is becoming a reality, WOW!

Expect the backer survey shortly including details for extra bits and bobs and details on your desired display names for backers at the "Name in credits" levels and then some updates on how the game is progressing!

I hope you all enjoy Flap Happy as much as I have enjoyed creating it

Thanks again

Developer Log: Gameboy Progress
8 months ago – Thu, Feb 22, 2024 at 06:30:17 AM

Hey Flaptastic Backers,

So, the Gameboy version of Flap Happy is coming together nicely and is being written in GBDK which makes development a lot faster when compared to assembly language, but presents it's own unique sets of design challenges, including handling functions well across different banks of memory, optimizing where possible to reduce CPU bottlenecks and ensuring the game works just as well on a smaller screen.

The design of the game is very similar to the NES, although levels are generated with different methods compared to the NES, due to the GameBoy's smaller screen size. Flappy moves a bit slower in general compared to on the NES, mainly to help deal with the GameBoy screen and it's issues with fast moving sprites becoming a blurry mess to the player, the background also should be fairly distinct from the spikes to help players out a bit here.

Whilst testing some of the levels out, the number of enemies needed to be reduced from 3 to 2 in some worlds as, using just as many on a smaller level made things really too unfair for the player. Level generation is still being tuned in a bit to allow for more variety between the stages but is coming along nicely.

Also, we're not just dealing with the Original Gameboy here, the game needs to be tailored to look closer to the NES version on the Gameboy color as, well, it just feels like the right thing to arrange. There's also modded monochrome Gameboys with enhanced screens which offer greater contrast and sometimes look better with a darkened background so for those consoles an inverted display option is also available.

Jayenkais' awesome chiptunes should sound even better on the GameBoy version once a couple of fixes have been applied to my audio engine. I might add an audio test depending on how well it performs within the games codebase closer to completion.

That's all for now, but stay tuned - I've got another devlog diving into the NES side on the way shortly!

Flap Happy Update: A Deeper Dive Into Stretch Goals, Gameboy Color Compatibility, and More Fun Ahead! 🚀
8 months ago – Tue, Feb 20, 2024 at 08:36:41 AM

Hey Flap-tastic Backers,

We're soaring into new realms of excitement with updates hotter than a freshly laid egg! 🐣 Let's dive into the coop of wonders:

🌈 New Characters: Flippy and Floppy!

Meet the dynamic duo that may join Little Flappy on this avian escapade if we unlock our first stretch goal! Flippy, the red speedster, zips through the skies with unmatched velocity – a bit like a caffeine-fueled morning bird. Just watch out, as Flippy's speed comes with a side of unpredictability! On the flip side (pun intended), we've got Floppy, the chilled-out green bird. Floppy likes to take a slower approach, but a leisurely ride doesn't mean friendlier skies. Together, they bring a burst of color and contrast to our feathered fiesta!

🎮 Extra Game Modes: Endless Flapping & Stage Practice!

Prepare yourselves for endless excitement with two new game modes: Endless Mode and Stage Practice. In Endless Mode, challenge yourself to flap as far as you can, dodging obstacles and collecting goodies along the way. It's a flapping marathon! Meanwhile, Stage Practice lets you fine-tune your skills. Pick a stage, run through it, and conquer the skies. With three words to choose from, each determining the type, layout, enemies and starting seed for the world, it's a personalized flapping adventure every time.

🕹️ Gameboy Color Compatibility: Flap Happy on the Go!

Drumroll, please! We're stoked to announce that the Flap Happy digital ROM will be Gameboy and Gameboy Color compatible. What's even cooler? The physical Gameboy cartridges will be interchangeable – giving you the power to switch between platforms seamlessly. Whether you're rocking the classic Gameboy or the vibrant Gameboy Color, Flap Happy is ready to flutter into your portable gaming world. Can you say, "Flap-tastic road trip entertainment"?
